diyskateparks.net is an archive of DIY skateparks in the USA. It documents parks created by people that serve as public recreational areas. DIY skateparks are places to hang out, work with concrete, skate, drink beer.
Rents are rising, property is being monopolized by private equity, and municipalities across America are unable to develop meaningful public spaces. DIY skateparks are a way to take back control of our surroundings. They are a way to turn the forgotten and unwanted lots into community areas.
The world is moving too fast for our institutions to serve us effectively - it is up to us to create the environment that we want to live in. This means that these parks get constructed without municipal support or approval. Subsequently, they get torn down without proper documentation. This project aims to change that.
